Today's lunch talk is given by Kurt. There are so many interns because Kurt is inventor of famous graphical library OpenGL. I think Kurt is a humorous person since he said he had just get his doctor degree two years ago, but you know he has invented OpenGL in 1992!

 

   Today's topic is about writing. Why we write so many things: papers, news, blogs and so on. One time I think if it is a waste of time that I have spent on writting blogs, but after read a book from Weinberg, I believe that it is valuable to take time for writing practice no matter what type the practice is. As Kurt said, writing is a way that we used to communicate with both other people and ourselves. It can make you understand what you are writing and what you want to say. Like writing computer code, sometimes it will make the design clear and you will understand more about the design thought behind the code. Writing also can help you express yourself in your own way. Every person's writing style has his or her own personal mark. And writing provide you a way that you can express yourself freely.

 

    Kurt talked about a lot of writing skills such as notes, writing process. He also recommended several good books that teach you how to writing. Here is a url I have got from one of friends, if you are really interested in writing, maybe it could give you some good suggestions.

When back to the dormitory at noon, I found Qinlai was watching a TV program 'national geography'. It was a story about a tiger. Tigers are large, cat-like animals. People often think that tigers are usually very ferocious. However, we can learn something from them.

   The tiger in the story wanted to hunt a deer living in water to eat. After failed several times, it eventually managed to kill a deer, but unfortunately the dead deer was snatched by a cayman. The tiger was very angry at the robber and roared to express its dissatisfaction. Because of thick fur of the dead deer, the cayman couldn't enjoy that delicious food. The tiger waited on shore patiently. Nine hours had pasted. Even there were some other deer appearing in the neighborhood ocassionaly, the tiger neglect them as they were not exist. The only thing that interested the tiger was the dead deer killed by itself. The opportunity was coming because the caymen couldn't deal with this dead deer. The tiger went into river and swam slowly toward its target. The dead deer was bitten and hauled out the water by the tiger. Tigers are very good at swimming. The only thing the cayman was able to do was watching and discontentment.

    From this little story, I learned that when concentrate on a fixed goal we should try our best to finish it. The most important qualities we need are calmness and patience.

    Samson is my roommate. He is a special person and have a lot of skills. For instance, music, English and perform talent. He always practices his English as possibly as he could.

    Recently, Samson opend his blog on MSN. Blogs are written in English. He has written several interesting articles such as "hair-cut". His exquisite emotion is embodied by the fluent English expression. He helps me studying English frequently. However, I always feel it is difficult for me express myself in English fluently like him.  I have a sudden impulse when I saw his new article today. I want to try to write something in English like him. Maybe at the beginning, it will be a tough task for me. But I will try my best.

   Learn from Samson.
